Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers are injectable gel-like substances that are injected beneath the skin to restore youthful volume, smooth lines and soften creases or enhance facial contours.

What Dermal Fillers can do

  • Plump thin lips
  • Enhance shallow contours
  • Soften facial creases and wrinkles
  • Improve the appearance of recessed scars
  • Reconstruct contour deformities in the face
  • Decrease or remove the shadow of the lower lids

Juvederm® dermal fillers are the most popular dermal fillers in the world, providing immediate, natural looking volume replacement, lift, feature enhancement, and correction of wrinkles and depressed scars.  Juvederm®  is also the most versatile dermal filler available, with a version customized for every need, including facial volume restoration, lifting of sagging tissues and brows, enhancement of lips, chins and cheeks, and the smoothing out of lines and wrinkles of every type.

Restylane® was the first hyaluronic acid injectable dermal filler used in the U.S. and has been safely used in more than 2 million treatments in the U.S. Now there are five different types of Restylane®, each designed for specific areas or goals.

What are the Differences Among the Five Types of Juvéderm?

All Juvéderm® products are made of non-particulate hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally-occurring sugar in human joints and skin that provides support and cushioning. To make the results last and provide support, the biodegradable hyaluronic acid in Juvéderm® is stabilized by cross-linking the molecules, & the XC versions have added anesthetic, making the treatments virtually painless. For your comfort, Getachew Health Center only uses the XC versions of all of their Juvéderm® products.

Currently there are five types of Juvederm which are each designed for different purposes.

Juvederm Ultra® and Ultra Plus® are made with Hylacross™ technology and are the two Juvederm products that attract and bind water, which can be an advantage in certain areas. Juvederm Ultra’s consistency is thinner than that of Ultra Plus so it’s best for fine surface lines and for subtle lip enhancement. Ultra Plus has a thicker consistency that’s best suited for filling deeper lines and for restoring volume where it’s been lost.  In our experience, Juvederm Ultra’s results tend to last nine to eighteen months, depending on the area where it’s used, and Ultra Plus tends to last an average of about twelve months,

The following Juvederm Vycross™ products all start with the letter “V”, standing for Vycross™ cross-linking. The Vycross method produces gels whose results tend to last longer, lift better and, because they absorb less water, tend to cause less swelling.

Juvederm Voluma® is a stiffer (yet soft to the touch) gel than Ultra & Ultra Plus, so it’s excellent for lifting slightly sagging areas below the area it’s injected, without adding too much volume. Because of these qualities, it works best when placed on top of bony areas like the cheekbones, jawline or brows. Voluma can be compared to using a center pole to lift a large tent. When the pole is placed on a hard surface, it can lift the entire tent. If it’s placed in soft sand, it sinks.Softer fillers like Ultra or Ultra Plus are compressed downward by the overlying skin more than Voluma. When Voluma is used in areas without underlying bone, like the lower cheeks, it’s at a disadvantage because it doesn’t attract water. In non-bony areas, Ultra Plus adds volume because of this water attraction. The improvement from a Juvederm Voluma lasts up to two years, on average.

Juvederm Volbella® is the thinnest of the Vycross products and is therefore a good choice for areas that usually swell easily, like lips and under the eyes. The results of Volbella last about a year, which is months longer than other hyaluronic acid fillers developed for use in those areas.

Juvederm Vollure® is the newest addition to the Juvederm family in the US, but has been used under the name Volift in Europe since 2013. it’s a medium thickness filler used for areas like nasolabial folds, marionette lines, temples, and lips. Vollure’s results usually last about eighteen months.

Getachew Health Center uses the original formulation of Restylane®  to lift depressions under the eyes (also known as “troughs”) that cause dark circles, smooth noses that have a bump, and plump up creased or tired ear lobes (when stud earrings are looking at the floor). Original Restylane results typically last six to nine months on average, but can last much longer when used to fill depressions under the eyes.

Restylane® Lyft (previously named Perlane) is a gel with a firmer consistency than the original Restylane, so it’s used to provide both a lifting effect as well as volume replacement. It’s a good dermal filler choice for cheek, chin or jawline enhancement, or for lifting sagging facial skin. Results from Restylane® Lyft last nine to twelve months, on average.

Restylane® Refyne & Restylane Defyne are the two newest Restylane fillers approved in the U.S. but have been safely used in Europe since 2010 under the brand name, Emervel. What’s unique about them is that they’re flexible & stretch under the skin with facial expressions, so that whether you’re laughing or frowning, they’re not visible under the skin. This makes them especially helpful for areas with muscles that pull the skin in multiple directions, like around the mouth. Both Defyne & Refyne results last about twelve months so many patients will get a touch up after about nine months to maintain their improvement.

Restylane® Refyne is a thin, stretchable filler so it can be used both closer to the surface of the skin than Lyft or Defyne, and also deeper. This makes it an excellent choice for lip, forehead, crow’s feet, and smoker’s lines, as well as the marionette areas, outside the corners of the mouth & in the lips.

Restylane® Defyne is a medium thickness filler so it’s used to fill deeper lines like marionettes (sad mouth lines) and nasolabial (nose to mouth corner lines) folds.

Restylane®Silk is a soft, thin gel that can be used for filling fine lines like smoker’s lines around the lips and crow’s feet, with results lasting about six months on average.
